Why people connect testosterone and joint pain

A 2023 meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials found that testosterone therapy increased hip bone density and total lean mass after six months. Reviews of sex hormones and musculoskeletal pain describe biologically plausible relationships, but they also emphasize that hormone replacement as a pain treatment remains far less established than the associations themselves.[3]
A small prospective pilot study reported less joint pain when hypogonadal men already receiving testosterone were given nandrolone, a different anabolic steroid.[4] That study was not a blinded trial of testosterone for common joint pain and cannot support the claim that TRT treats arthritis.
