Baking Soda on Hair: Why High pH Can Cause Damage

Baking soda is not a good routine shampoo substitute. Its alkaline pH can swell the hair fiber, increase surface charge and friction, disturb the scalp barrier, and leave hair rough, tangled, or prone to breakage. A single brief exposure is unlikely to cause permanent hair loss, but repeated use offers little advantage over a formulated cleanser.

Why people put baking soda on hair

Sodium bicarbonate is inexpensive and can loosen oil or residue. Homemade recipes often combine it with water as a paste or follow it with an acidic vinegar rinse. The appeal is simplicity, but hair and scalp care depend on more than removing grease.

Commercial shampoos use balanced surfactant systems, thickeners, preservatives, conditioning agents, and an adjusted pH. A kitchen powder does not provide that complete system.

How pH affects the hair shaft

Hair has a negatively charged keratin surface. More alkaline conditions can increase negative charge, swelling, and fiber-to-fiber friction. Greater friction makes hair harder to comb and can lift or damage the cuticle over time.

Can baking soda clean buildup?

Rinse thoroughly, wash gently if residue remains, and apply conditioner to the lengths. Avoid high heat, bleaching, tight styles, and aggressive brushing until the hair feels normal. Stop all new experiments if the scalp burns or develops a rash.
