Fenugreek and Testosterone: Does It Work?
Standardized fenugreek extracts have produced favorable testosterone, libido, strength, or body-composition outcomes in several human trials. Meta-analyses suggest a small average benefit for total testosterone, but the response depends on the extract, dose, study population, and starting hormone status.
Fenugreek, or Trigonella foenum-graecum, is a culinary and traditional medicinal plant. Its seeds contain fiber, saponins, amino acids, and other bioactive compounds. Whole seed powder and concentrated standardized extracts are not interchangeable.
How fenugreek may support men’s health
Researchers have proposed several mechanisms, including effects on steroidogenic enzymes, free testosterone metabolism, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and libido. The exact mechanism in humans has not been fully established and may differ by extract.
Fenugreek is also studied for blood glucose, digestion, lactation, and appetite. A benefit in one area does not automatically prove another, so testosterone claims should be based on the relevant male trials.
What meta-analyses found
A 2020 meta-analysis of four clinical trials found that fenugreek extract had a significant effect on total testosterone in men. A broader 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis included seven studies with 449 participants and reported a small positive effect on total testosterone.
The 2023 review also examined body composition and performance. Results differed by outcome, and the studies used proprietary extracts with different compositions. That variability is a reason to choose a studied standardized extract instead of assuming any fenugreek capsule will behave the same way.
Fenugreek in active and middle-aged men
Several trials enrolled resistance-trained or recreationally active men. Some reported improvements in strength, body composition, or hormonal markers when fenugreek was paired with a training program.
Other trials enrolled men with age-related concerns or lower sexual function. A 2024 randomized study of men aged 40 to 80 reported within-group hormone changes with a proprietary extract, while the between-group total testosterone result was less clear. The mixed result reinforces the need to look at the comparison with placebo, not only the before-and-after number.
Why standardization is important
Fenugreek extracts can be standardized to saponins, glycosides, or other compounds. Extraction methods change the chemical profile, and two products with the same milligram amount may not be equivalent.
Look for the extract identity, amount per serving, and a transparent label. A clinically studied ingredient has a closer connection to published research than a generic powder hidden inside a proprietary blend.
Where fenugreek fits in a complete formula
Testosterone health is influenced by stress, sleep, body composition, nutrient status, exercise, and age. Fenugreek can complement ingredients that work through other pathways rather than acting as the entire formula.
Noophoric Men’s+ provides 300 mg of fenugreek along with 600 mg KSM-66 ashwagandha, 600 mg tongkat ali, 250 mg Coleus forskohlii, boron, zinc, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and other ingredients designed to support healthy testosterone levels, energy, drive, and resilience.*
Compare the role of fenugreek with the evidence for ashwagandha and testosterone, another ingredient used in the same formula.
Can fenugreek support libido?
Some proprietary fenugreek studies have reported improvements in male sexual function or desire. Libido depends on hormones, sleep, stress, medication, mental health, relationships, and vascular health, so a supplement response should be interpreted within the broader picture.
Persistent loss of libido or erectile changes can justify medical evaluation even when a supplement helps energy or confidence.
Safety and interactions
Fenugreek can cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and a maple-syrup-like odor in sweat or urine. Allergic reactions are possible, especially in people sensitive to peanuts, chickpeas, or other legumes.
Fenugreek may lower blood glucose. Combining it with insulin or diabetes medication can increase the risk of hypoglycemia. It may also affect bleeding risk, so people taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication should obtain professional guidance.
Concentrated supplement use during pregnancy is not the same as culinary use and requires medical advice. Stop the product and seek care for a serious reaction.
How long should a formula be evaluated?
Many fenugreek trials last eight to twelve weeks. That timeframe is more realistic than expecting an immediate testosterone change. Use the product consistently, keep training and diet relatively stable, and track the outcomes that matter.
A feeling of stimulation is not the same as hormonal support. Fenugreek is not a stimulant, and a well-designed testosterone formula does not need to create a dramatic sensation on the first day.
Testing and medical context
Fenugreek is not a diagnostic tool or replacement for care. Clinically low testosterone is evaluated through symptoms, repeat early-morning measurements, and tests that help identify the cause.
Read our guide to testing testosterone correctly if low libido, erectile changes, infertility, low bone density, or persistent fatigue are present.
Frequently asked questions
Does fenugreek increase testosterone?
Meta-analyses report a small average increase in total testosterone across several trials. The effect is extract-specific and not guaranteed for every man.
How much fenugreek was used in studies?
Trials use different standardized extracts and doses, often several hundred milligrams per day. The exact extract matters as much as the milligram number.
Can fenugreek improve gym performance?
Some resistance-training studies report benefits, while others show smaller or uncertain changes. It should complement progressive training and adequate nutrition.
Does fenugreek lower blood sugar?
It can influence glucose, especially at larger amounts. People using diabetes medication should monitor carefully and involve the prescribing clinician.
Can fenugreek be taken with ashwagandha?
They are combined in some complete men’s formulas because their proposed pathways differ. Review the full label and medication interactions rather than evaluating each ingredient in isolation.
Bottom line
Fenugreek has a meaningful human evidence base compared with many men’s wellness ingredients. Meta-analyses suggest a small positive effect on total testosterone, and selected trials report libido, strength, or body-composition benefits. Choose a transparent, standardized extract within a complete formula, use it consistently, and keep sleep, nutrition, and training in place.
