Hair Shedding With a White Bulb: What It Actually Means

A white bulb on the end of a shed hair is usually a club root made of keratin. It does not mean the living follicle was pulled out, and it does not prevent that follicle from growing another hair. The bulb helps distinguish a naturally shed telogen hair from a shaft that snapped through breakage.

What the white bulb actually is

During the resting, or telogen, phase, the lower portion of a hair stops growing and becomes a hard club. When that hair releases, the club end may look white, clear, or pale. It contains no living matrix cells and no blood supply.

The follicle is a structure within the skin. It does not normally come out with a shed hair. A new growing hair can form from the same follicle as the cycle continues.

White bulb versus breakage

A shed club hair is often full length and has a small rounded or translucent end. A broken hair has no club root and may end bluntly, fray, or split. You may notice many shorter pieces rather than long strands.
