L-Lysine for Hair Growth: Protein, Iron, and Evidence
L-lysine is an essential amino acid used to build proteins. Hair contains keratin, so adequate protein matters, but that does not mean isolated lysine makes hair grow faster in a well-nourished person. The most relevant evidence connects lysine with protein adequacy and possibly iron handling in selected people with iron deficiency, not with a universal hair-growth effect.
What lysine does
The body cannot make lysine, so it must come from food. It contributes to protein synthesis and other normal functions. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, soy, beans, and lentils can provide lysine. A varied diet with enough total protein usually covers the need without a separate supplement.
Why it is marketed for hair
Hair fibers are protein, and severe protein restriction can contribute to shedding. Lysine has also been studied alongside iron in women with chronic telogen effluvium. Lysine and iron
Some small studies suggest that adding lysine to iron therapy may improve ferritin response in selected women who had not responded adequately to iron alone. The ideal use, dose, and patient group remain uncertain. Iron deficiency itself should be diagnosed with history and laboratory testing.

Will lysine speed hair growth?
There is not strong evidence that supplemental lysine increases growth rate or density when intake is already adequate. Hair grows through a slow cycle, and the follicle responds to health, hormones, genetics, inflammation, and nutrition. A single amino acid cannot override pattern hair loss or scarring disease.
Who might have low intake?
Risk is more plausible with severe calorie restriction, very low protein intake, malabsorption, food insecurity, or a poorly planned diet with limited protein sources. Vegan diets can provide enough lysine through legumes and soy, but variety and total intake matter. A registered dietitian can review an unusually restrictive pattern.

Spread protein across meals and include enough total energy. Adding lysine while continuing an aggressive low-calorie diet may not fix the underlying trigger.

Ask whether a study tested lysine alone, whether participants were deficient, how many people were included, and whether hair outcomes were measured objectively. A higher ferritin result is not identical to proven hair regrowth. Marketing often collapses those separate questions.

Lysine is essential, and adequate protein supports normal hair biology. Supplementation may have a role in a documented dietary or iron-related problem under professional guidance. It is not a stand-alone treatment for unexplained thinning and should not delay a diagnosis.
