Beetroot Benefits: Blood Pressure, Exercise, and Nutrition
Beetroot is a nutrient-dense vegetable and one of the best-known food sources of dietary nitrate. Through the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway, beetroot can support healthy circulation, exercise blood flow, and selected performance outcomes. Research also suggests a modest reduction in clinic systolic blood pressure in adults with hypertension.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials in adults with hypertension found that beetroot juice reduced clinic systolic blood pressure by about 5 mmHg on average compared with control. The review did not find a significant effect on clinic diastolic or 24-hour blood pressure, and the certainty of evidence was low.
That result is meaningful as nutritional support, but beetroot should not replace prescribed blood-pressure medication. People already taking blood-pressure drugs, nitrates, or erectile-dysfunction medication should ask about combined effects and lightheadedness.
Exercise endurance and oxygen efficiency

Because nitric oxide affects cerebral blood flow, researchers are studying beetroot in cognition and healthy aging. A 2026 systematic review reported potential physical and cognitive benefits in older adults, but studies varied and the evidence is still developing.

Whole beets
